kevin bLechdom biographical information

KEVIN BLECHDOM - is Kristin Erickson, who recently moved back home to Tallahassee, Florida after 5 busy years in San Francisco. While in the San Francisco area, she attended Mills College, founded a band called BLECTUM FROM BLECHDOM, toured the world playing music, and released records on tigerbeat6, deluxe, orthlorng musork, shimmy disc, four states fair, unbearable, dial(), and phthalo. Kevin Blechdom plays two laptops, a red strap-on MIDI keyboard, a red banjo, and sings songs.

Kevin Blechdom was born in 1978 in Florida and grew up playing classical piano and writing notes on staff paper. She tried to take the piano seriously but found herself suffocating in a very conservative musical space, so she tried something else.

Kevin's first releases were with a band called Adult Rodeo which included her brother Rob Erickson and her sister-in-law Stephanie Mankins in Austin, Texas. She played keyboards in Adult Rodeo and began singing. There are currently 3 Adult Rodeo albums, two of the CDs are released on Shimmy Disc. Adult Rodeo toured the US and Europe with Kramer and Jad Fair.

At Mills College Kevy B. learned about computer music, began programming her own music software, and met Blevin Blectum (Bevin Kelley). One magical day, Kevin and Blevin were playing two solo sets before a Halloween party in 1998. At the exact moment when Kevin was fading OUT her music and Blevin was fading IN her music, they heard something they liked and finished the set together. Their first record was recorded that weekend and they named themselves bLectum from bLechdom. They played locally and threw unsanctioned parties in the basement of Mills College. Kevin bLechdom played live on her laptop with software she programmed in MAX/MSP and bLevin bLectum played music with her sampler. They would sync up by listening and not with MIDI; they prided themselves in being out-of-control and confusing. Sometimes they wore a costume that connected them together. Kit Clayton and Sue Costabile's label Orthlorng Musork released the first EP "Snauses and Mallards" in March 2000. A few months later bLectum from bLechdom released a full length CD on Deluxe Records called "the Messy Jesse Fiesta." (This CD won second prize for Digital Music at Ars Electronica in 2001, and they were invited back as jurors for the 2002 festival.) bLectum from bLechdom also releasesd a 10" on dial() records called "bad music and butt prints," and each cover was individually stamped with two blectum-paint-covered-butts. The next B.F.B. release was a Halloween EP on Kid606's label tigerbeat6 called "De Snaunted Haus." After this record sold out, tigerbeat6 re-released "Snauses and Mallards" and "De Snaunted Haus" all on one CD called "Haus De Snaus." Now bLectum AND bLechdom are working on solo projects.

Kevin Blechdom released her first solo EP called "the inside story" on tigerbeat6 in September of 2001. This 3" CD contains music generated with software Kevy programmed in MAX/MSP. Currently, Kevin has been playing banjo and writing songs, some are on her newest EP "I heart presets," also on tigerbeat6 and released in May 2002. Kevin Blechdom created the art for the covers of the bLectum from bLechdom releases and her solo CDs. Live performances include a variety of original pop songs, computer music, banjo playing, and a cover of Tina Turner's 'Private Dancer' while doing an awkward chair dance. Kevy released two new 7"s this year, one features a collaboration with Fred Frith. Her full-length computer/pop record called "bitches without britches" for Chicks on Speed Records will be out early next year.
